“Facebook is people you met in your life – who you don’t really want to talk to.
Twitter is people you don’t know – who you want to talk to.”
Social networking is basically the use of dedicated websites and applications to communicate informally with other users, or to find people with similar interests to one self. In the previous years there have been a lot of different social networking websites for example Orkut, Hi5 etc. But until now none of them have been able to attract large numbers of users or media coverage. But now Facebook and Twitter have been able to do that.
Facebook and Twitter are now a day the most popular social networks, they are used every day by millions of people around the world. Both of the social networking sites are very different from each other. Twitter acts as an “RSS reader” in which users are shown exactly what and from whom they want to see or hear. It consists mainly of professional servers and news. It also acts as a celebrity stalker.
Facebook, On the other hand, is used for more basic and daily life routine messages. For example “I just made pasta.” It is more personal and facilitates contacts between friends (reproof events, photo gallery, and chat). This characteristic is basically the reason of Facebook being the most visited sight in the United States.
While extremists will immediately point to either Facebook or Twitter as being grander, the truth is that each has its own pros and cons and will tend to appeal more too different types of people and for different reasons. It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish in a given situation.
Advantages of Twitter include easy to navigate and update, reach far beyond your inner circle of friends, pure communication tool, rapid responsiveness and you don’t have to be logged in to check updates you can easily use a RSS reader.
Advantages of Facebook include application mashup; find people, make connections, email, instant messaging, image/video sharing, etc and most people can quckly grasp the value of connecting with friends, family and established contacts; according to a report some people say they use Facebook instead of email and IM.
Disadvantage of Twitter include limited functionality; send brief messages, direct replies, find people, limited to 140 characters per update and not all people find it immediately useful.
Disadvantages of Facebook are more difficult to update and navigate, requires investment of time to realize sustained benefit and Opt in model requires a user to allow others to connect.
To sum up, both Facebook and Twitter are simply communication tools; both will continue to grow and transform as users find new ways to extract value and either network may or may not become a long term winner in the swiftly evolving world of social networking. Time will only tell which site will be more profitable and scalable.
